Certification of Welding Procedures

When it comes to joining, a prerequisite for work to commence are proven procedures. Inappropriate technology and consequently improper characteristics of welds may lead to severe consequences.

Certification areas:

  • Welding procedures
  • Soldering procedures

Standards applicable for certification of welding and soldering procedures:

  • EN ISO 15614 series
  • EN ISO 15613
  • AD-2000 HP2/1
  • ASME B&P Code section IX
  • SIST EN 13134
  • SIST EN 13067
  • DVS – Merkblätter 2201-1/2 / 2203-1 / 2207-2

Joining procedures certified by Q Techna:

  • All procedures of metal welding (manual arc welding, MIG/MAG, TIG, SAW, oxy-fuel welding, laser welding,..),
  • soldering,
  • thermoplast welding

Welding Procedure Certification Process

The certification process for welding procedures is clearly defined; a customer should be acquainted with it beforehand.

Material and Shapes of Test Pieces

In case you prepare your own test pieces, pertinent certificate type 3.1 or higher apply.

Filler material requires certificate type 2.2 or higher.

Test pieces for welding procedure certification as per SIST EN ISO 15614

Dimensions of test pieces (mm) to be used for the purpose of certification as per SIST EN ISO 15614-1 for the following:

  • Welding of a butt weld in plate
  • Welding of a butt weld in pipe
  • Welding of fillet weld in plate
  • Welding of a socket weld

Are presented in the next drawings:

Butt Weld in Plate:
a - minimum value of dimension 150 mm
b - minimum value of dimension 350 mm
t - Plate thickness

Butt Weld in Pipe:
a - minimum value of dimension 150 mm
D - outer diameter of the pipe
t – Pipe wall thickness

Fillet Weld in Plate:
a – minimum value of dimension 150 mm
b – minimum value of dimension 350 mm
t – Pipe wall thickness

Branch Joint on Pipe:
α - Kot a – minimalna vrednost 150 mm
D1 – zunanji premer na glavni cevi
t1 – Debelina stene glavne cevi
D2 – zunanji premer na cevi
t2 – Debelina stene cevi pod kotom

Welding of Test Pieces

pWPS

Welding is carried out in accordance with the welding procedure specification, prepared by the customer. Q Techna can provide the support you need.

Where does the welding of test pieces take place?

To achieve optimum results we recommend that the test pieces be welded on customer's premises under our supervision. Thus welders work in their own environment using their own equipment.Q Techna professionals will assist you in the preparatory phase of certification tasks for the range to best suit your production.

Issuing certificates/WPQR (PQR)

On condition that all standard requirements have been met, the certificate is issued - authorizing the welding procedure WPQR; generally, its period of validity is unlimited. It is reaffirmed by means of constant application, and, if the need be, by welding production tests (compliant with SIST EN 13445-4, requirements AD 2000 HP 2/1, SIST EN 1090-2 and 3,..). Upon certification against ASME Code Section IX, we issue a qualification test report – a draft of PQR, and, based on our recommendations, the company then issues the PQR.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the validity period for welder certification against SIST EN ISO 15614-1?
The period of validity is unlimited, as long as welders do not go beyond a specified length of time without performing that specific type of welding, or by executing welding production test, as required by product standards for pressure vessels and steel structure. However, SIST EN 1090-2 applicable for steel bearing structures imposes restraints on WPQR in dependence on the type of base material.

How long does it take to obtain the certificate?
The certificate is generally issued following the welding of test pieces, or earlier, if so agreed beforehand.

How do we submit the exact requirements for the certification scope?
The certification scope is submitted in the request.

What are the key variables that define the extent of the certificate?

The key variables that define the certificate scope are as follows:

    • Welding procedure;
    • type, thickness and shape of the base material,
    • type of filler material,
    • type of welding joint (butt/fillet),
    • welding position, welding from both sides (bs) (with material backing -(mb)) or single side welding (ss),
    • heat intake.

The range of validity of WPQR is significantly more narrow than that of the welder certification.

Does certification for butt welding cover also fillet welding pursuant to SIST EN ISO 15614-1?
Yes, it does. However, in case of a large number of fillet welds, the customer typically demands a demonstration of fillet welding.

What is the validity period of the certificate against SIST EN ISO 15614-1?
As recorded on the certificate.

How to determine the type of certification and therefore the WPQR range?
A starting point are welds created in the production. Should you need any help, please send us drawings and description of welding procedures, or contact us by phone.

How do we calculate the costs for certification in question?
On the basis of your request you are sent an offer.

How do we submit a request?
You may send/submit it in a number of ways: by mail, e-mail, using online application form downloaded from the front page for the area in question, by phone or in person.

In case you have any further technical or commercial questions, please contact us by phone or e-mail.
