FAQ

What is qualification?

Proven competence, expertise, skills, experience and physical fitness that allow NDT personnel to professionally conduct Non Destructive Testing.

What is certification?
A procedure which proves that the candidate has adequate qualification for specific NDT method, level and sector and leads to issuing the certificate. Certification does not include operational authorization.

What is Certification Body?
The body which carries out certification procedures for NDT personnel and meets requirements of EN ISO / IEC 17024

What kind of qualifications and certifications exist in NDT?

In general, we distinguish two approaches for qualification and certification:

  • Third party - where certificate is issued by an accredited certification body (example: EN ISO 9712 standard or
  • qualification and certifcation by the employer (internally with employer in accordance with ASNT SNT-TC-1A or ANSI / ASNT CP-189), whre the certificate is issued by the employer (ASNT = American Society for Nondestructive Testing).

What does it mean that the certification body is accredited?
That means that certification body meets the requirements of EN ISO / IEC 17024 and is authorized by the national accreditation agency/body to carry out the certification process. In Slovenia certification  bodies are accredited by the Slovenian Accreditation, in Germany Deutscher Akkreditierungs Rat etc...

Who can request and verify a particular certification?
Actually, the eligibility of operator's certificate has to be verified and checked by subscriber of NDT services or particular inspection service before carrying out the control service. Usually, the Quality Assurance (QA) is responsible for this in the company. Certificates issued by an accredited independent certification body give a certain guarantee that the process of education, qualification and certification of the controller is in accordance with the reference standards. The problem may arise in the certificates issued by non-accredited training agencies, but nevertheless is written "in accordance with ..." on them.In such case, the accreditaction body's compliance assessment with EN ISO / IEC 17024 has not been (or has not been successful), which calls into question the quality of such training and the formal recognition of the certificates themselves.

For employer based certification, the employer must have a written set of rules ("Written Practice") on education, qualifications and certification based on reference recommendations or standards. Written practice is recommended to check, approve and in particular verify whether the certification if actually carried out like that.

When is the certificate valid?

In accordance with the reference regulations, the certificate must contain the validity period of the certificate. In addition, the certificate is valid only if the certified person has a valid visual acuity test required by the reference regulation and finally, if the certificate is signed by an authorized person in accredited certification body (in case of an independent certification) or by "Mail Level III) if it is a "employer based" certification. The basis for certification according to CP-189 standard is successfully passed examination, which was conducted (administered) under the guidance of the so-called ASNT Level III (Level III in a specific method that has a certificate issued by ASNT = American Society for Nondestrucive Testing). The person with the ASNT Level III qualification eventually signs the candidate's certificate.

What is the difference in certification / examination according to the new EN ISO 9712:2012?
Compared to EN 473, there is a small difference in the number of training hours. In the case of recertification, the entire practical part of the exam should be carried out.
